Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Not all murder victims are mourned. For Robert Church, superintendent of the Parramatta Female Factory, the most enjoyable part of his job is access to young convict women. Inmate Grace OLeary has made it her mission to protect the women from his nocturnal visits and when Church is murdered with an awl thrust through his right eye, she becomes the chief suspect. Recently arrived from Port Macquarie, ticket-of-leave gentleman convict Hugh Monsarrat now lives in Parramatta with his ever-loyal Irish housekeeper Mrs Mulrooney, who has herself lived through the 1798 Irish Rebellion. Monsarrat, as an unofficial advisor on criminal and legal matters to the governors secretary, is charged with uncovering the truth of Churchs murder. Mrs Mulrooney accompanies him to the Female Factory, where he is taking depositions from prisoners, including Grace, and there the housekeeper strikes up friendships with certain women, which prove most intriguing. Monsarrat and Mrs Mulrooney both believe that Grace is innocent, but in this they are alone, so to exonerate her they must find the murderer. Many hated Church and are relieved by his death, but who would go as far as killing him? The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Etat : 2017. A near fine copy. Jennifer L. Holm (illustrateur). In the Port Macquarie penal settlement for second offenders, at the edge of the known world, gentleman convict Hugh Monsarrat hungers for freedom. Originally transported for forging documents passing himself off as a lawyer, he is now the trusted clerk of the settlement's commandant. His position has certain advantages, such as being able to spend time in the Government House kitchen, being supplied with outstanding cups of tea by housekeeper Hannah Mulrooney, who, despite being illiterate, is his most intelligent companion. Not long after the commandant heads off in search of a rumoured river, his beautiful wife, Honora, falls ill with a sickness the doctor is unable to identify. When Honora dies, it becomes clear she has been slowly poisoned. Monsarrat and Mrs Mulrooney suspect the commandant's second-in-command, Captain Diamond, a cruel man who shares history with Honora. Then Diamond has Mrs Mulrooney arrested for the murder. Knowing his friend will hang if she is tried, Monsarrat knows he must find the real killer. And so begins The Monsarrat Series, a fast-paced, witty and gripping series from Tom Keneally and his eldest daughter, Meg.

Trade Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Not all murder victims are mourned, but the perpetrator must always be punished . Robert Church, Superintendent of the Parramatta Female Factory, takes full advantage of his position. First, there are the opportunities to siphon off supplies and sell them. And the Factory also provides an excellent front for Robert's sly grog business. But to Robert's mind, the most enjoyable part of the job is access to the young convict women under his care. There are irritants and Grace O'Leary is chief among them. She has made it her mission to protect the younger women from Robert's nocturnal visits. She even went as far as to organise a riot sparked by his treatment of the women. Robert will deal with Grace in due course. But for now, fresh from visiting one of the Factory's new arrivals, he feels rather pleased with himself. Until he hears footsteps following him across the courtyard. Turning, he just has time to recognise his assailant before the tip of an awl is rammed upwards into his brain via his right eyeball. Recently arrived from Port Macquarie, ticket-of-leave gentleman convict Hugh Llewelyn Monsarrat now lives in a small but comfortable house in Parramatta. He would be more than happy for his housekeeper, Mrs Mulrooney, to have the best room in the house. She, however, prefers to have her own domain, and lives in a room adjoining the free-standing kitchen. There is only one aspect of their relationship on which Monsarrat insists. At the request of the murdered Honora Shelborne, Mrs Mulrooney's former employer, Monsarrat is teaching Mrs Mulrooney to read. Monsarrat is now attached to the Attorney General's office, officially as a clerk, but also as an unofficial advisor on criminal and legal matters. He is visited by the Attorney General's Secretary, Rupert Symes, who tells him the superintendent of the Female Factory has been murdered. A convict woman, Grace O'Leary had a particular grudge against him and is being held. Monsarrat is asked to take a statement from her. Grace doesn't strike Monsarrat as a murderer and so he goes each day to the Female Factory, to transcribe the depositions of prisoners and staff while Grace remains the official suspect. Mrs Mulrooney comes with him, and strikes up a friendship with Grace. She also meets Rebecca Nelson. Mrs Nelson, whose husband encourages philanthropy, regularly visits the Factory to do what she can for the women there. Once the depositions have all been taken, Grace still looks set to stand trial for the murder, a crime of which she still claims to be innocent. Monsarrat and Mrs Mulrooney both believe her, but are at a loss when it comes to exonerating her. A number of people held grudges against Church and many are relieved by his death, but who would stretch to murdering him? 324 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Paperback. 1903. When a boatman is murdered on a remote island off Van Dieman's Land, the authorities want to blame a famous, and very inconvenient, political prisoner. But the victim's history of blackmail prompts Monsarrat to look further afield - and not everyone is happy . . . In this, the third in the Monsarrat series, Hugh Llewelyn Monsarrat and his trusty housekeeper, Mrs Mulrooney, are sent to remote Maria Island to solve the murder of Bart Harefield, the detested cutter skipper responsible for bringing supplies and correspondence to the island. Bart knows that knowledge is currency and he's not shy about reading the letters he brings across. When Harefield is murdered with an axe, blame is laid at the feet of Thomas Power, the charismatic Irish revolutionary held in detention - with a lot of privileges - on Maria Island. Monsarrat and Mrs Mulrooney are told to solve the murder. They soon realise their real job is to tie Power neatly to the crime, so he can be hanged without inciting rebellion. But were there others who also had reason to want to shut Harefield up? New Book.
