From the Foreword: HAYWARD CIRKER's creative energy, intellectual curiosity, and genuine desire to benefit people through educational and entertaining books drew him irresistibly to a career in publishing. Having made this choice, however, he was equally drawn to another pursuit, the art of sketching and painting. Throughout his busy life he would, in any spare moment, give in to an artistic impulse that resulted in a steady stream of sketches, illustrations, paintings, and cartoons (often with captions) that reflected his broad and varied interests, his fascination with and concern for people, and an irrepressible sense of humor. Emerging from the Depression years as a young couple, sharing a love of books and an appreciation for their power to change and improve lives, Hayward and I made an early commitment to providing people with good and useful books at prices they could truly afford. With the aid of dedicated colleagues, over a period of six decades we built up a publishing list of over 7,500 titles that is internationally recognized for its quality and diversity.
