In 1749, Father Serra set out from Vera Cruz, on foot through the dense jungle, to Mexico City. It was the beginning of a spiritual adventure that lasted the rest of his life. At the age of fifty-five, almost crippled, he set out again with an expedition that traveled almost a thousand miles up the California peninsula to settle San Diego and Monterey.
