This book features interviews with four to six people from different walks of life - rich, poor, urban and country dwellers - who grew up during the 1950s. Their memories and reflections combined with historical information give a real picture of what life was like as a child during the post-war era of Rock 'n' Roll and the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth: what their home was like; what food they ate and how much it cost; what games they played; where they went to school and how they travelled around. We learn about special occasions such as Saturday cinema, village fairs and holidays on the beach. The book is illustrated with photographs supplied by the contributors themselves, supplemented by more general photos, posters and artefacts from the time.

Rebecca Hunter has skilfully edited four people's memories about growing up in the 1950s...children could use the book as a model for their own collection of evidence comparing the experiences of people they know. (Junior Education)
